Xbox 360 has certainly changed the way we play games, and so has the PC. Its capabilities have been more prominent than those of PS3, as both hardware and software have increased substantially during the last decade. But the PC is also a much more versatile machine. It is, in my mind, still the best way to play games. Whether you want to play games in high definition or if you want to play games in widescreen, you can do it. The quality is sharper, the resolution has been bigger, the framerate smoother and the array of supported resolutions has expanded to include hundreds of thousands of pixels. When it comes to the games, though, the 360 is still king. No doubt you can see this, because you’ll be able to see it in action on your machine. The PC is a more versatile machine. It can handle games in reskinned HD, it can handle game animation and it can even handle 3D games. So what about the future? How about the next-gen? I’m not saying that the PS3 is going to get supersized, super-powered versions of games any time soon. It’s inevitable that some sort of enhanced version of the 360 will come out at some point. It won’t take as long, though, and it won’t be as powerful as the PS3. So there’s still time to make the most powerful version of the game – not to mention it will be cheaper than the PS3 next year. A lot of games are going to take advantage of the hardware. But it’s a question for developers, not developers. When it comes to next-gen it’s going to be about what games are going to take advantage of the new hardware. We’re going to have to move to new hardware to do our version of things better, we’re not going to do our version of things better, and we’re not going to do our version of things better. A lot of next-gen tech is going to be expensive, and it’s going to be more expensive than what we did with the PS3. So it’s going to be up to developers to take advantage of the new features and to take advantage of those opportunities. The first games that’ll take advantage of the new consoles’ capabilities are going to be the ones that are going to be the biggest selling points for the console. So things like Halo 4 and Call of Duty 4 are going to be very interesting, because they’re going to be the first games that you’re going to be able to play on the new consoles. The software that still allows you to play on 360 with your old 360 is going to be pretty tough to take advantage of. And so what’s really exciting is what it means for the games industry, isn’t it? The same thing with the games industry is that it’s going to be different. It’s going to have to adapt to new hardware. Because of the cost involved in bringing games to new hardware, it is going to be different developers. They are going to be different makers. So what we are seeing now with the cross-platform capabilities is going to be interesting for the industry. And it has to be different – we have to be able to create interesting experiences that in the future will make it attractive to new people, and that can’t just be a pretty shooter. We also have to convince people, “Here is what you think, here’s what we think. We think you’re going to want to do. It has to be something that will make you interested.” If it doesn’t make you interested in that, it’s going to be hard for developers, because you’re not going to be making games for somebody. It may be that it’s not a killer feature for the console, and it may be that. But I think that fad that’s stuck in people’s heads is going to be sort of squashed in the next couple of years. That’s true of the next-gen as well. It’s got to be something that is going to make people want to buy the consoles. It has to be something that will make people think about how cool it would be if they plugged into the new console and kind of shoot the ball back and forth and do some really cool stuff. Who is going to do cool stuff? We’ve got to do something that will make people want to get on their new console and want to do the cool thing.
