The short version: You cannot get any satisfaction from playing games, and if you want to, you’ll be worse

We all know the phrase: Game X doesn’t provide any real payoff for your extra hard-working hours. But what exactly is it that makes games so immersive? The short version: You cannot get any satisfaction from playing games, and if you want to, you’ll be worse. The long version: You can play games to escape reality. You can play games to escape reality, but you’ll be worse. For those who don’t play games, the short version of this statement is that you can play games to escape reality. It’s a common enough saying in online gaming. But it also implies a different meaning, and that’s perhaps even more powerful because games are a platform to interact with real life. The study, the National Gaming Study, was done with the help of a small team in the US, and it surveyed 15,000 gamers to see how they played their favourite games. It found that 38 per cent of all games players are in the “excellent” category, meaning they did great “excellent” in the great variety of games played. So what exactly is the process of making something great? The process isn’t just making a great game. It’s pitching a product that excites us, and then trying to convince us that it will actually be good. In the case of games, this means that we’re more likely to buy games than we’ve been to play games. The most interesting question, then, is why people play games in the first place. The researchers asked about what it is that makes games so immersive–and the results are revealing. Here are the results of how they arrived at their findings. The traditional way of getting people to play games is via the medium of downloadable content. The more a game has to offer, the more we want to play it. There’s a reason for this: The average price of a game is $60, and that’s the most people can afford. Even if we could drop that to $50 or $40, we’d still want to play games. And games are generally $30 or $35. So what gives? The key thing to do is to make it affordable. A game that was $60 would have to cost $30 to $40 to play. So you could get $60 for $60 of gameplay, but that’s not going to be very enticing to people.
