2010: Here’s what we saw at the Microsoft press conference Microsoft’s press conference reveals the Xbox 360 Elite, a new handheld console with a Radeon GPU and CPU that’s 1/1000 more powerful than a PS3. Microsoft’s press conference reveals the Xbox 360 Elite, a new handheld console with a Radeon GPU and CPU that’s 1/1000 more powerful than a PS3. Above: This new 360 Elite will be so powerful that it’ll ‘leave your fingers scarred and look like a veteran’, says Microsoft The Elite will also have a more powerful GPU than the standard Xbox 360. It’s so powerful, in fact, that it’ll enable more realistic games, including some that are 50 times more powerful than the PS3. Microsoft’s also bragging about how it’s able to achieve 120 frames-per-second. Considering how powerful these new consoles are, it’s not hard to imagine some gamers will be stoked when they hear their 360 Elite can run 120 games-per-second. At the very least, it’ll be a lot more movie-worthy. Oh, and it has a new camera, too. Microsoft announced that the new camera in the Elite will be “more powerful than any other console on the market”, which is full of potential for video. “No other console on the market today delivers a video experience that is so bright and crisp. Even better, it will make your picture look like a movie or a TV show,” said the company’s Vice-President of Xbox Live, Major Nelson. (Fingers crossed.) Currently, the tech in the Elite’s GPU is still so powerful that it won’t allow for any kind of faster graphics processing. Currently, games on 360 will be ripped every so often to their Xbox Live or Game of the Year-grade, and the Elite will be able to process that information with no processing step. Microsoft’s announcement on the Elite will be the last thing the Elite will be doing in terms of its processing power. It’s a lot more powerful than the reference Xbox 360 that we were shown, which is a bit like the Xbox 360 Elite. It’ll be like a monster. No, but it will still be pretty damn impressive. The Elite will come packaged with a 2TB hard drive and an HDMI port. The hard drive will be 320GB, but will also be expandable at 500GB capacity. The HDMI port will be 1/4″ long, and will be able to handle 4K video. Edit: We were told by a press release that the hard drive will support “ISO level 80”, which is more than what we were shown. However, it’s now stated that the hard drive will be “a 1TB model”. We stand by our original story. The hard drive is 320GB, but will double up as a portable SSD, so we’re not sure what the “storage capacity” is supposed to be. We’ll update our story when we have more info.
